Electrical Design Engineer II

Type: Full Time

Location: Bend, OR or Monterey, CA

Salary Range: $70,000-$85,000 Annually

 

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

 

This position is responsible for completing detailed designs, including preparing drawings and specifications, completing or assisting with completing technical calculations, coordinating work within the Engineering team and other outside disciplines, and managing the submittal review process and other contract administration activities associated with the construction phase services.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design basic electrical systems with some guidance. Systems would include normal, emergency, and backup power electrical distribution systems, lighting and lighting control systems, and special systems including fire alarm, nurse calls, etc.

  • Compare and discuss alternative design solutions with others.

  • Develop knowledge of and the ability to incorporate the requirements of applicable building and energy codes and standards into the project design.

  • Perform basic analysis of project electrical loads to inform electrical system design approach, sizing, and requirements.

  • Assist with field investigation and assessment of existing equipment and systems and determine available capacities and actions necessary to integrate new systems with existing ones.

  • Perform calculations required to design systems that adhere to utility company requirements, the AHJ, and all applicable code requirements.

  • Size, select and schedule basic electrical distribution system components and equipment.

  • Size, layout, and coordinate requirements of electrical and IT equipment rooms, equipment yards, generator rooms, and other electrical equipment spaces, accounting for working clearances, constructible installation, and equipment service requirements.

  • Develop basic electrical system single line diagram and electrical schedules, and determine required system components, to depict a complete and fully operational system.

  • Design basic lighting and lighting control systems, including fixture selections, fixture, and lighting control device layouts, and scheduling. Develop basic lighting system control sequence of operations and control diagrams to meet project performance, design, and energy code requirements.

  • Coordinate, collaborate, and communicate project requirements with the Project Architect, Contractors, and other engineering disciplines.

  • Review other discipline design drawings to confirm required coordination, including architectural, mechanical, structural, and civil.

  • Proficient in two-dimensional design in AutoCAD and three-dimensional design in Revit, following company standards.

  • Edit project specifications to reflect project requirements.

  • Adhere to ColeBreit Engineering's design and technical standards, including incorporating quality control processes.

  • Assist with review and comment on basic Contractor product data submittals and shop drawings.

  • Assist with responding to Contractor construction questions and understand potential future impacts of responses to the design team.

  • Conduct construction site walk-throughs, with or without a senior designer or engineer's assistance, and write clear and concise field observation reports.

  • Serve as a project lead on small projects as required.

  • Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality of client and business operations information.

  • Safely use all equipment and materials. Follow established safety procedures, use appropriate safeguards, and observe common-sense safety rules in all on-the-job activities.

  • Communicate clearly, actively listen and build relationships of trust both internally and externally.

  • Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge by participating in/utilizing in-house educational training/materials and establishing and maintaining professional networks.

  • Communicate any known violation of any office policy, code, safety policy, or law immediately to leadership.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the home office in which they are assigned.

TRAVEL

This position regularly requires local travel (within 50 miles of home office) and often requires travel outside of 50 miles from home office (day trips). Occasionally requires overnight travel.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or related field (as appropriate for position) from an ABET accredited institution.

  • Experience in MEP consulting, showing skills at the project level.

  • Knowledge in electrical systems design, system alternatives, and renewable energy systems.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize in a fluid changing environment.

  • Must be organized, flexible, independent, and self-motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, detail-oriented.

  • Ability to foster a collaborative work environment and lead team efforts by promoting cooperation, commitment, and accountability within the team to achieve short- and long-range team goals in line with the company's mission, vision, and values.

  • Ability to develop and maintain appropriate relationships with superiors, peers, colleagues, clients, and vendors.

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including accurate grammar and business correspondence knowledge.

  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • EIT preferred, with intent to obtain a professional engineering license within three (3) years.
